Here's a e-mail message (subject: Newest Network Security Update) I received 5 mins ago:

Microsoft Customer

this is the latest version of security update, the
"March 2003, Cumulative Patch" update which eliminates
all known security vulnerabilities affecting Internet Explorer,
Outlook and Outlook Express as well as five newly
discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to protect your computer
from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of which could allow
an attacker to run executable on your system. This update includes
the functionality of all previously released patches.

It contains this virus (according to Norton AV):

Norton AntiVirus removed the attachment: p178116.exe.
The attachment was infected with the W32.Gibe.B@mm virus.

A few threats have been doing this for some time.

This kind of social engineering for dummies even warents its own MS page and CERT article:

Its nothing new really but your right, people should always be on the alert and never appy patches sent through email
