Hey all,

I have a friends Vista Business workstation here with me.

I am trying to figure out why the 2 DVD drives are not listed under "Computer".

I checked the device mangler, they are both listed there, but with an exclamation mark beside each.

After a few hours of searching, I found the firmware update, but alas, I cannot install it onto the DVD drives from vista.

Next step I tried was a boot from vista DVD, and a system repair. That didn't work.

Next step, I ripped out the dvd drives and went and bought two more from Samsung (The originals were Optiarc)

Vista is doing the exact same thing to the new ones.

At some point, these drives must of worked, because I installed Office2007 cd's when I first got him this machine.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do, other than a reformat and reinstall. I am trying to avoid that all together.

Kind of funny how I see this topic I decide I want to join in.

Interestingly enough Carpo, your support thing doesn't work for this laptop that I've been trying to help fix.

For some reason, the laptop has lost the drive completly though in the BIOS. Though from what I've been told, it sometimes shows up there, but not show up in Vista itself. I figure "If it doesn't show in the BIOS, of course its not gonna show in Vista." So if no one minds me joining in on the topic, mind also helping out in that aspect?

Hey Carpo,

could be bad drive or bad connection/port on the motherboard

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
