virgin media are a bunch of.........

seconded - I'm going to have to train my housemate to survive without a constant stream of HD quality porn

I'm on Be now :D

12Mb Down/ 2Mb up, all day, all night :)

Far better than the 2Mb down, 200Kb up I was getting most times of day on Virgin while paying for 20Mb/768Kb...

i might go with them - im only 1340metres from the exchange so should get good speeds

ahhh... i think it's fair actually, but also frustrating that you get throttled.

how is it fair? - we are paying for a service we wont get as the idiots who run VM are over subscribing to the network without updating it, the CEO claims net neutrality is "*******s" and they have already put that into practise, the new 50mb tier will be uncapped and un-throttled, whereas every service below it will be throttled

i think a majority of people use the net to play games or to do general browsing so they won't normally exceed whatever "fair use" thresholds the provider sets. Obviously, those who dl pr0n n movies 'constantly' deserve to be capped/throttled.

EDIT: Those who do dl tonnes of data constantly *should* be paying more for the service.

and what about if you d/l game demos on xbox? or dvds of Linux distributions? or stream movies from legitimate sites? or use the bbc iplayer? or even stream music, all this adds up.

Not everyone is d/l mad amounts of porn, all though like MS controls 90% of the desktop market only 90% of the net is porn.

We pay enough as it is for our inet over here and its crap, everyone has better net speeds than the uk £37pm for 20meg is too much and the soon to be rolled out 50mg will be £47pm

I don't understand what the complaint is;

The tightened regime means that between 10am and 3pm subscribers to its "M", "L" and "XL" packages will have their connection throttled for five hours if they download more than their full speed ration.

the only people targeted are those who are taking more then they are paying for

so what's the problem?

"net nuetrality" is the bandwidth for the site, providers can't tell you what speed you are going to view a particular site as opposed to the site they want you to view

net neutrality is has nothing to do the bandwidth you pay for and if you are taking more then you pay for as far as bandwidth I think if it creates a load pressure for the provider they have to do something about it

wrong: they are doing it to all, we dont pay by the gig, we pay a set amount each month for what they say is an unlimited connection, but how is it unlimited if they say d/l xxx amount and we will reduce your speed by 75%

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/15/virgin_media_net_neutrality/

and as i have said they are doing this in a round about way with the connections, pay for 50meg, no limits no throttling, but pay less and you get limits and throttled.

And the ration they say is a "limit" they have imposed, when i first signed up i didnt sign a contract that stated anything about limits, as they said it was unlimited and i could download as much as i like, since virgin took over service is crap, speed at the best of times even when you haven't downloaded your quota for the day is rubbish, they are getting rid of tech support, in general what was once a good ISP under blueyonder, is now a joke under Virgin media

if they're doing it to everyone I agree with your point but the article says it's only doing it to people that are taking more then their ration

if the article is missleading I agree with you carpo, if the article is not missleading then I agree with them

if your contract is without limits then they are in breach of that contract, you and others would have punative redress

this is the purpose of "punitive" redress, which is compensation far in excess of damage

the purpose is to insure companies like this don't do things "because they can"

for instance, if a company thinks law suits will cost less then doing what they are supposed to do, they will do it whichever method costs less money, therefore there must be punative redress to overcome their "bottom line" strategy

there might be a class action and I think you might look into that

they have changed much in their terms and conditions, but as i understand it if they do that then they have changed the contract you signed with them, and if they do that you have to sign a new contract stating you will abide by these new terms.

They are still advertising the broadband packages as "unlimited", they have gotten around that by saying well you can still download as much as you like just not between the hours of xxx and xxx, i can and have set all programs to stop uploading or downloading during the new times, so it shouldnt effect me too much.

Point is if their network cannot handle all the users on there due to a few "users" using too much bandwidth, and most say you only need 2meg for browsing checking email and the odd download, why do they (all companies) offer higher speeds? if 2meg is enough why offer 5, 10, 12,16 and 20meg? They must know that people will use the speed if they have it there, some will as will always happen abuse the system, but if Virgin decided to spend some money and update the systems even some inside of virgin have said needs updating, backends, headends and ubrs (routers) (which they should be doing for the 50meg upgrade) the system would not be as bad as it is.

Hmmmm, this might be a good excuse for us to ring up and cancel our contract..

if you have had it for more than 12 months you don't need a reason, and if they ask for one you don't have to give them a reason either, they will try to bribe you though :)

less than 12 months :p Not looking forward to that conversation - see how much it costs to buy out the contract

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
