Can a dvd player play a data dvd with avi files burned on it?

Depends on the DVD player, check the manual or the logos on your DVD player. A friend of mine has one which is capable of playing DVDs, VCDs and DivX files on DVD/CD media

most recent models can, but there are limits as to what features in the mpeg4 asp spec can be used

also limits on resolution, framerate, interlacing, fourcc, colourspace, etc. many files you might "find" on the net should work i think
