Video Conversion Program

I currently have a video that I would like to convert to a more standard format (preferably mpeg2) with the intention of burning it to dvd.

The video is supposedly encoded in x264 (mpeg-4 AVC) format and the audio in Vorbis, the file is in OGG format (as a container I assume). For the life of me I cannot find a program that will accept this video to convert, anybody have any suggestions??

TIA
James

more standard? mpg2? For burning you really should be starting from a good source like avi I believe.... would any expert like to correct me?

avi is a container which holds both audio and video streams. This does not determine the type of encoding (video and audio) which could be xvid, divx / mp3, aac etc, nor the quality ^_^

If the file's in a ogm container then i believe you will need an ogg splitter (http://www.vorbis.com/files/1.0/tobias/OggDS0995.exe homepage: http://tobias.everwicked.com/ if link doesn't work) and for x264, you will need the x264 encoder (http://x264.nl/). Once you have both of these, programs like TMPGEnc(http://www.tmpgenc.net/), or possibly even NeroVision (http://www.nero.com/) should be able to read and convert the file to mpeg-2.

EDIT: If this does not work, you may have to download virtualdub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) and convert it to a more "friendly" format, such as xvid, mp3 in avi (using high bitrates so as not to lose quality) and then most programs should recognise the file. A bit of a round-a-bout way of doing it I realise, but hey, if it's more of a once off thing then it shouldn't be too bad.

Post back with how you go.

Well the video is mpeg-4 apparently x264 is some sort of open source format of the h.264 format. I don't follow this stuff to much but from what I can understand it's pretty decent.

Yalooze, that ogg splitter was what I was missing, I assumed (Wrongly I guess) that since I could play the videos no problem that I should have all needed codecs etc to convert them, problem was that none of my converters would recognize them. I installed the ogg splitter and tmpgenc express is happily working away to combine the 3 videos and size them for a single dvd disc, not sure what the quality will be like as I am putting over 3 hours on a single DVD5 with an Avg. Bitrate of 2500kbps but I'll have to wait and see

Anyways Thanks Muchly Yalooze, appreciate the help.

No problem, jpom.

And I've encoded video around that bitrate with no noticeable difference. Although I only have analogue TV, would be interested to see how it looks on a higher res digital setup.

does autoGK do avi to DVD...I used to use Winavi converter but I can't even get it to open anymore with version 7.1. I tihnk it has something to do with divx 6.0 but I"m not positive, also when winaviconverter crashes it locks up Dr Watsons Post Mortem Debugger as well..

All in all I can't make dvds from Avi files quickly anymore (winavi used to do a full conversion in 45 minutes or less where as other ways take hours)

I don't believe it does, look for a program called D.I.K.O. gold, that's what I use and I think it does a good job and is fairly quick.

Will probaby look pretty bad. You might want to try going with Half D1 instead. With D1 anything with a bitrate less than 4000 will start to get blocky. Half D1 at 2500 should give you a less blocky picture.

I've encoded nearly 4 hours of video at 2300kbps using D1 and have noticed very little blockiness. I find that with video you can actually get away with a hell of a lot more than you can with a still image. Eye of the beholder i guess :)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
