Vfat??

I know this forums are mostly for winxp but anywayz i went on my old computer with win98 and it gave me a blue screen saying somethin about damaged or missing VFAT and then the system halted. What the heck is VFAT. I formated my hard drive i deleted all the partitions and create juz one partition. Now everytime i boot my system wont detect my hard drive and cd rom.... i can't install any os now....due to "hard disk failure" dunno why and how...plz can anyone help me with this!
