All of sudden my XP Pro got very slow without installing any new software or changing any system settings!

When I realized that the system is very slow I open “Task Manager” and I found that the item System is using 99% of the CPU Speed and full CPU time. So I started to look what will cause the System to take 99% of my CPU speed.

I started by running adaware and updated antivirus to check if my system got a spyware or a virus that use most of my CPU speed and no luck.

Then I started to uninstall useless software and do a system cleanup with Windows Mechanic… But no luck

I run msconfig.exe to Disable Load Startup Items… But no luck.

Then I run it again and Disabled Load System Services... and it works! But Windows is useless without the System Services... so I started by Disabling non-Microsoft Services and that didn’t work. So I started to disable Microsoft services one-by-one until I found that if I disable the Plug and Play Service the system became fast again.

So I looked what services that depend on the Plug and Play service and I enabled the Plug and Play service and disable the services that depend on the Plug and Play service and no luck!

So I reinstalled my XP Pro using the upgrade option not fresh installation… But no luck! :(

I updated my windows system files from the windows update website and restarted… but no lock…

Is there any solution to this problem other than doing a Fresh installation of Windows XP Pro?

I can’t use the system restore because I think after reinstalling windows XP I lost the previous restore points :(

Please help me with this…

dude mine is doing exactly the same thing. it was running SOO damn fast until 2 days ago when for no reason its just suddenly become VERY VERY slow.

I'm running a PIII 733mhz, 128mb ram, 32mb Video card i'm not sure of too much else, i'm not that technical

But i ran a Norton Anti Virus 2002 BETA and it found only one virus but it had been on the computer for months and i didnt have a problem so i doubt it was that. I havent installed anything new or even downloaded anything, i never open an email unless i know who its from and i never open any attachments even if its from someone i know. so why my computer is chugging i havent got a clue

Do This
Close All Programs and open windows
Ctrl + Alt + Del
Select Processes Tab
List everything That is running and its CPU and Memory Usage

Also Are you running IIS? If so Disable it And see if that helps.

How can I findout if IIS is running and how can I Disable it?

IIS is not installed

I checked in [Add/Remove Windows Components]
and I can see that IIS is not installed.
:(

yeh which is IIS???

is that short for something becuase in my processes tab there is nothing even remotely similar?

ok man fixed my problem, i updated Norton Antiv Virus and ran a check on my computer, 3083 virus's. It was a worm named W32.Benjamin.worm. It basically went through and just added 3083 crap files, stuff like games n porn and all sorts of bogus files, thus taking up resources. It was under the c:\windows\temp\sys32. Have a look in there, u may have the same sort of problem. I had norton antivirus quarantine the whole lot and then i deleted em. fixed my problem, hope if helps u ;)

mrgx - What USB devices do you have?

You might find that unplugging one of them makes the CPU time used by the 'system' process drop to normal i.e. almost nothing).

The 'system' process contains a number of threads used by various OS "housekeeping" functions, and also threads created by and used by various device drivers - esp if they have to poll their devices. And WAY too many sloppy driver writers seem to overuse that latter mechanism.

I had a problem much like this until I unplugged my USB pccard/SM card reader. Didn't matter if there were any cards in it or not.

If you have the win2k resource kit tools (yes, I know, you're in XP, but the 2K RK tools work fine) there is a method... sometimes... for finding out which driver's thread is using all that CPU time.

it worked!

I started to unplug the USB hardware from the PC then I have an USB mouse (Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical) and the mouse was connected to via adapter to PS/2 input. so I unpluged it too. and I connected it to a free USB input
Plus I have a HP Office jet G85 that is connected to the PC via USB and to the Printer Port LPT1 so I unpluged the LPT cable. went back to the PC.
The PC asked for the Creative USB WebCam Go Plus drivers and it was installed.
then when I finished the installtion of the drivers XP found the USB mouse. and it's working now...
and the CPU usage went down!!!

I'm afraid after restarting my PC now the problem will come again...

Anyway where can I find win2k resource kit tools?

And my PC brand is Zai it's a Saudi brand

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
