Unable to Log on NT Server

The client is running win 98, off Windows NT server.
When I log it says"Unable to find domain server to validate user".

I've checked the connections they are fine.
Protocols are all installed.
Computer has unique name as does IP address.
Ping own address and returned stats, indicating protocols ok.
Gateway is correct.
Client account is on the server. Tried logging on as Administrator, but same message comes up.

Also cannot ping host or gateway. Like I've said I've checked the connections they are fine.

Is this a software fault? Or a network Card fault?

Thats a good place to start as any. The network card. Switch slots or change cards.

also check to see if you can ping 127.0.0.1 If thats ok... make sure the computer is a member of the domain, if it isnt then add it, also if it is then remove it and re-add it. Hope it helps.
