basically it seems someone (one of my room-mates) used my computer while I was @ uni and there is now a item on my favorite's list that I can't remove...

C:\Documents and Settings\Sazar\Favorites is the path and when I click on delete... it basically says Cannot Delete file : Cannot find source or disk

not sure what I can do to remove this... I have run both ad-aware and spybot and they have afaik removed everything there was to remove and immunized everything there was to immunize...

any help would be appreciated...

you can disable two things in Group policy [assuming XP Pro]. User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar, here are the entries and the reg changes [for manual or XP Home].

# Do not use the search-based method when reolving shell shortcuts

* KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
* DWORD: NoResolveSearch = 1

# Do not use the tracking-based method when resolving shell shortcuts

* KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
* DWORD: NoResolveTrack = 1

Or you can change the properties of the shortcut to point to something thats there.

I edited it to read item now since it does not appear to be a shortcut...

I tried editing it in everywhich way but no changes hold...

I will try the registry edits in a bit and see if that helps

-edit- those registry keys are not in my registry :confused:

No you will have to add them, and I would think a restart is needed as well.

:eek:

I'll wait for a bit and see if anyone else drops some other pearls of wisdom.. I would rather not edit my registry unless I have to...

if nothing else comes by I'll give it a go...

thanks m8... :)

sure, its not that dangerous, well as long as you dont .... well just backup :)

Here ya go, easy to merge regfiles.

The add regfile:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoResolveTrack"=dword:00000001
"NoResolveSearch"=dword:00000001

The subtract regfile:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoResolveTrack"=-
"NoResolveSearch"=-

made changes and no go :(

same problem... same message... can't remove since source or disk not found...

damn, I figured that would do it. You can always try the old notepad fix.

Moral of the story - keep a password and share it at your peril? :rolleyes:

I just re-formatted my computer...

because I had just reformatted it I had not installed any pop-up blockers or any AV software @ the time which would have helped catch this problem...

-edit-

checked through and seems some program called global dialer was installed... I am not sure if this little POS item is related though... i took the necessary steps to remove glbal dialer (would not have affected me much since I dont have dialup) but I still can't remove the item...

Have you tried to delete it via a command prompt?

yah I did speedy... actually thats the way I try to delete most apps/items that I can't through windows but I get a similar error message... ie can't find the item..

its almost like a ghost icon in my fav's folder :(

Hmm. Tried killing explorer then deleting it?

Or just install linux, that solves most windows problems :)

I am just gonig to reformat... I'll ttyl lads.. thanks for trying :)

well it was getting frustrating :)

some dialer apps kept popping up from time to time and what not..

anyways the format is complete... just installing stuff now :)

Well, put a password on this time, and WinKey+L every time you leave the machine. :D

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
