too many temp directories

I like to keep my temp folder empty, but with XP, have noticed that there is a temp folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Carolyn\Local Settings\Temp which is full of folders and files. Can I safely delete all the files listed here? Some of them are named 'help' 'objects' 'ohotfix' 'queries' 'behaviors' 'commands' 'configuration' 'reports' 'shared' 'sr1patch' 'temporary directory 1 for KPT3.zip' and on and on. Since this install was over Win ME, I'm wonderng if this contains junk left over.

At any rate, does anyone know if I can delete the folders and files?

if possible, make a backup of the dir, and rename it, then delete the temp folder and restart - if system boots and works fine, and nothing is messed up, then its safe to delete - if you have problems, rename the backed up folder temp...

Yeah, you should be ok to delete them. If you have any concerns just copy them someplace before you delete them. Then if anything comes up asking for a particular file then you can put it back. After a week or so i'd say it would be completely safe to delete them permanently.

ok. I've made a new folder and moved them, but haven't rebooted yet, in case I can't....

If there's something important in the TEMP-folder, you put it there. There are no system critical files in there what so ever.

Go ahead and reboot.

for some reason some apps put things in the temp folder and use them.. no idea why besides crappy programming... its always better to opt on the safe side.. but for the most part, it should be safe to kill it

Actually I do use DiskCleanup and these files are not being accessed by it. Only the files under Windows/temp (I'm not used to XP so I'm not sure if that's the location of the temp directory in XP) but these files are ignored by DiskCleanup utility.
