the nforce soundstorm story goes something like this (feel free to correct me if you think something's wrong).
1) Soundstorm indicates a Nvida certified digital out. This is the only available audio device that will encode a signal to dolby digital (5.1) in real time and output it via the spdif.
2) The analog sections is normally a 6 channel Realtek ac97 chip.
The highest quality is from the spidf out.
