Taskbar & start button disappeared

Due to some strange reason, my desktop changed completely in the sense that my taskbar and start button disappeared completely (I cannot get them back) and on my left side of the desktop, a vertical bar appeared with 'Folder Tasks, other Places and Details' in it. Since my start button disappeared, I cannot do anything. How can I get them back?

this might be a dumb question but have you tried to press the windows key...my kids some times push the taskbar all the way down were you can't see it or to the side...so I just press the windows key so the start button expands so I know where the hell they move it to.

If you don't have the windows key on your keyboard, press ctrl + esc to bting up the start menu.

if it's not the case like Adobo said, this might be helpful:

windows key + e will get you windows explorer
windows key + r will get you the run box
windows key + d will show the desktop
F3 while on the desktop: Search

type "c:\documents and settings" in to run (acsses from taskmanager) without quotes i typed it in to get into my documents and boom there it was the full start menu and icons although i had resently edeted eplorer to so start menu txt said daniel
