Task Manager

I'm curious, I have 34 process running, according to the task manager. Some of them are under my user name and some under system.
They are using up a lot of my RAM(only have 256 to start with). Are all these really required to operate the system, if not how do you know which ones you can shut down? How do you keep them from coming back on restart?
Any thoughts?

well if most of them are Svchost.exe you can get rid of them by disabling unncessary services using the administrative tools/services section in the control panel.

as for the other items you'd have to see what programs they are from and get rid of as needed

you can type msconfig at the run prompt and goto startup and services to also diable items and make sure they don't load at startup
