"System" process causes CPU to jump to +50% every few minutes

Hello everyone.

I am hoping someone here can assist me in troubleshooting a problem I'm having.

Every few minutes, cpu usage jumps to 45-50% or more for the "System" process causing mouse lags, typing lags, and other application pauses. This lasts for about 3 to 4 seconds then everything goes back to normal for another few minutes.

I have posted a HiJack This list on another forum and I am told my log is clean. I also ran multiple spyware and virus programs with no results. I have also attempted to update all drivers by going to the IBM Thinkpad support site.

I am also attaching a screen shot of my device manager.

Thank you for the help.

First off, I fixed your attachment. It's better to post something that users don't have to download, like a picture file instead of a Word Document.

SYSTEM isn't a process, that is the user the process runs under. If you are viewing the Task Manager, look at the Image Name of the instance that causes the spike.

Screenshot for your reference of my task manager

The image name is "System". The User Name is "SYSTEM".

Can you post a screenshot of your task manager?

Use the ALT + Print Screen key combination to get the active window to ensure for clarity. Paste it into something like MS Paint, save it as a picture please.

Here is the task manager.

I have updated and ran Symantec AntiVirus, AdAware, and Spybot.

Can you also post a hijackthis log here? I want to see where it lives.

Any chance this is related to having old or bad drivers? How do I go about verifying this? I have tried going on to the laptop vendor website and downloaded and installed what I could.

"System" is a system process. It normally uses around 236K of memory (yours is using 232K, which is normal).

Ok.. is it normal for the system process to use up 45% CPU every few minutes? I am trying to determine whether something else is causing the lag while the system process is running some task that is completely normal.

I've never seen the System process use anything more than 0%, then again I have a high performance system.

What else are you running in the background when you notice this happening?

I'm on a laptop running 1.4 GHZ with 1.5 GB RAM.

I don't think I have anything over the usual amount of programs running in the background. This spike happens pretty much all the time.

I ran two of the rootkits and nothing.....

I've noticed even if I am not using my computer, (I had the task manager up and just sat watching it), the CPU spikes every minute or so.

What type of machine do you have?

Have you checked in your event viewer for any warnings/errors around the times of the spike? Start - Run - "eventvwr.msc"

Random Question - Have you tried/done any types of overclocking?

Two things can cuase usage to spike;

1) A program is consuming resources.
You've check the spyware, and hijack looks bug free. BUT - that is one long hijack this list. Any one of those programs could be performing a periodic task taking primary focus away from what you are working on. Phone home on the web, save to disk, update web page, multimedia tasks, etc. Personnaly I'd never want my system that cluttered. Multiple special toolbars, TIVO, multimedia, many programs that I don't recognize. You need to go through the list and decide what you really need and ditch the rest.

Then look at the running appplications in task manager and see if all the tasks are really needed. Even a race horse will crawl if you strap enough baggage to his back.

2) The system is slowing down.
Newer Intel LAPTOPs have a built in clock speed reducer to conserve battery power. There have been reports of some versions of bios or drivers not throttling CPU speed properly. Look in the bios and turn off battery saver functions and see if that makes the slow downs go away. Also listen for hard disk activity when the slow down occurs. My system used to go and do something on HD that lagged me out badly. I never did isolate it but a HD defrag and moving which partition I had my pagefile on has pretty much eliminated it (even though it should not have).

All good suggestions Leejend - but wouldn't those in most cases lead to something else besides SYSTEM.exe?

I could only think of something that may be hooked into it and hiding behind it, maybe?

yup, i'm having the exact same issue on an HP desktop - except it only does it with Outlook open. Uninstalled a bunch of stuff, ran spyware/virus scans, still no luck. They "System" process just spikes every few minutes w/o reason.

Unusual software - Spoke, Salesforce, WebEx.

ideas?

start, run msconfig. Remove everything from startup. Reboot and wait. If this works then slowly add back programs to startup until you find the culprit. If not them i am useless.

when i saw the title of this thread again (seen it before, but couldn't think of any reason).... something suddenly hit me. isn't there a setting to kinda do like... an auto-defrag when the computer is idle? maybe it just starts doing that without noticing the computer is being used? i dunno... a huge shot in the dark...

If that was the case, would still be defragntfs.exe or whatever it's called, running under user SYSTEM - this is SYSTEM.EXE running as SYSTEM - no?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
