svchost.exe using cpu @ 100%

Lately something must have changed on my wife's system as when I start it up I notice svchost.exe is monopolizing the cpu and I can't do anything else.

Is there a recent cause for this? What can I do to stop it from taking over my wife's computer.

AVG antivirus - up to date and always protecting
Windows Defener - up to date showing no problems when I run a scan

Windows firewall -on

Restore-off

automatic updates - now set to just notifiy me when there are some

Go get Process Explorer and then when you mouse over the svhost that is using CPU you can see what services or apps are related to it.

You may want to post a Hijackthis log too so all can look it over.

a temp fix for this i have found was to disable automatic updates. not the service but just tell them not to check for updates. not to notify either.

once that is done i would leave the affected computers online sitting at the windows update site and in the morning it would get through to download everything.
reboot the computer and then its no more LOL

i have seen this with about 20 computers now. not sure what causes it but its annoying to say the least. that is how i fixed them but yea. not sure on the cause.

I think it started when I installed Office 2003. I also turned off the auto update and it seems to have helped.

I noticed a similar problem after a Genuine Advantage update a couple weeks ago. The latest version phones home with your serial number even if you tell it not to. It's getting pretty invasive and if the MS site is down or overloaded it just hangs waiting.

The problem is caused by the automatic update service looking for updates to MS Office products (this includes Outlook). I've been experiencing this problem at work when we moved from SUS to WSUS (which supports office updates) we've had to move back the old server.

MS will recommend a few patches to fix the problem but they don't work, from what i've seen on other forums this isses was raised with MS in october last year and as of the 20th March 2007 they still have no fix for it. The only way to get around it on a home PC is to stop the Automatic Update Service.

If anyone knows of a fix then please post it cause at the moment i'm having to use SMS to push out office patches

M$ Office has had this problem for a while now. Of course, it isn't fixed with Office 20077 either. The best thing to do is keep automatic updates turned off.

We just actually rolled out WSUS here and it took about 8 patches for it to work correctly. Once it does, it works wonderfully. I would recommend turrning the Auto Update service as has everyone else.
