Anyone ever used Sun's Solaris operating system ?
A mate of mine is going to be using it at university soon and i'm now cusious about it myself...

So what's your opinion of it, what are its advantages etc....?

We use it at school (Univeristy of Linköping, Sweden) and personally I hate it. Possibly because it's slow, boneheaded and I'm not the admin. Can't say I ever liked using *nix for a long time, but Linux beats the crap out of Solaris, at least the version we have at school.

I'm quite curious to get some feedback about Solaris myself.

there seems to be a distinct lack of information on it around the net
I just thought it's one of the o/s' I haven't used yet, and with a mate using it, I could get help easily and relate to what he's gonna be telling me about it...

Its not available for x86 right?

There were rumors that Sun was going to release an x86 distro, but I'm not sure if it's true or not.

its always been available for x86, and its been available for free download in the past,
much like many linux distributions, its just Sun recently announced that they wheren't going to continue with the intel platform and solaris 9 would be Sparc only,
but after much complaint from x86 users they finished the code for x86 Solaris 9 and made the x86 8 and 9 downloads charged.
you can only get Solaris 9 Sparc for free download now, but the x86 version is available ($20 i think)

Hmmm ... I guess I can forget about it then. I wouldn't want to pay for a OS I've not heard anything about :p

At this time, I wouldn't pay for any OS other than Windows XP :p

EDIT: Whoa!! Just realized I hit the 800 posts mark! w00t :D

Solaris is avalible for the x86, but it SUCKS. Porting a RISC operating system (Sparc) to a CISC platform (x86) causes a horrid performance loss. If you are going to try it, get a Sparc machine. Other then that, it works just like a standard UNIX.

It's very good at what it is designed for. For back office systems it is very fast and stable. For desktop use I would never consider using it. X interface is OK not as good as Windows. We host very busy websites using Sun boxes that have to run 24/7 but they all sit in a machine room locked away from everyone else. Desktop PC's are used to access them using PC X server software.

Our university is full of them... Fortunately there are Windows machines as well (this is one). *nix for servers, Windows for desktop. Keep it simple. :)

just the way i like my computing :)
i like linux/unix/bsd, only problem is its about as functional as a 1 legged table (desktop wise), having your Desktop box with Windows on networked to a nice bsd box is a much nicer and easier way to compute :D

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
