Startup Problem

I turn on my computer running windows xp pro sp1

and it boots up to the startup...but doesn not ask for my password....
how do i get in...or get by this?

i'd like to be able to backup some files before i format...

any help would be much appreciated.

does it do the same thing in safe mode?

to get to safe mode, hold the F8 key while booting, and it will give you choices...choose safe mode.

yes...same thing in safe mode...buts its ok..i found an alternative...
