Speech Recognition in Other Programs

I recently installed Office XP along with its speech recognition feature. I was wondering if its possible to use the feature in other programs besides Office XP. Does anyone know?

I could definately see the ability to dictate text in programs such as AOL Instant Messenger.

I havent used any Text to Speech programs but XP has a TTS engine
