Hey Guys,

I'd like to have a simple (PHP seems pretty complex) message board for my website. My host offers a simple meggage board as part of my hosting goodies, but it gets slammed by POrn spam within hours of activating it. ANy suggestions? I don't want to have to have people "register" for instance, just to give me feedback on my art.

if u can afford it, get vbulletin, thats we run here, its good

If you have any forum which doesn't require some kind of validation of the user then it is open to automatic spamming

vbulletin might not qualify as simple.

Wraithchild, does your host support PHP? Why does a PHP based guestbook, shoutbox, bulletin board seem too complex? Are you wanting to write it yourself?

Some ideas to reduce spam and not require validation would be to use the MT-Blacklist file and check the contents of that with the contents of the comment entry. Probably also have a secure image thing which the person has to type in as well for the form to be fully processed and the comment added to the database/flat file

Sounds like I'll just have to stick to having people e-mail me their comments / critiques. If I forced everyone to sign up just to leave me comments, I'd never get any feedback. What about some kind of form that would e-mail me comments? That way the porn spam wouldn't end up on my site, and people would have an easy to use method of sending me feedback? Is there a sinple cgi script for that?

if you set up a phpBB board you can allow guest posting but your hosting will have to allow php and sql. most non-free hosts provide these services to thier users.

I am not sure if this can help, but my brother has a website and people can add comments to news entrys he has (blog) and it never gets spammed.

You have to enter a Name and I think a email address to post. But you dont have to register or anything.

EDIT:
I am pretty sure he coded the whole site himself too.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
