Sound stops working

Every now and again, my sound stops working. In most cases, it is after a minor program crash or just after a program that uses sound closes. All I can do is reboot. Does anyone know why?

Run diskchecker "dskchk", make sure you have the upto date sound drivers.

"Minor" program crash? If it's all configured properly, there shouldn't be minor program crashes. I'm sure someone will be able to debug your fiasco.

I ran chkdsk. didn't come up with anything.

gta2 update patch - what update patch. how would this cause the sound to stop working if other programs do it too.

sound drivers - windows xp sound drivers

windows update - nothing

speakers - properly configured.
