sound problem

my volume icon has dissapeared from the taskbar and when ever I try to play music/mp3s i get this error...

"this operation cannot be performed because the pins are not connected"

my operating system is windows xp pro

winamp doesnt work anymore eathier does sonique

all i know is my sound card is built in, came in the computer

i dont know what brand it is or drivers
