sound card

hi i got a big problem with my sound card...
ok i formatted the pc with fdisk. i got windows 98 on and plan on upgrading to xp but thats another problem anyways. i installed the drivers for my soundcard but it says there isnt one. it wont play anything. i need some help on getting it to work please!.

it says its working properly but i dont get any sounds and their is no icon in the systray i also get mmsystem002 error in winamp and in wmp6 it says there is no audio device

Maybe an upgrade to XP will solve the problem ...

would disabling onboard sound do anything?

i still cant get it to work. im scared to update to xp cause when i do that the screen goes black when i get to the login screen then i gotta format with fdisk. and the last time i did that i needed a new network card :/. would it be possible to install drivers through safe mode?
