I'm running XP pro with SP1 installed and it's been fine for ages. I have a Creative Audigy Ex Platinum soundcard installed in the machine and most sounds are working. That is, games work, my TV card works, DVD's, CD etc with no problems. However, some system sounds just stopped working a few days ago and I can't figure out why. I open the control panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, sounds tab and click on any of the sounds and they play in preview ok. For example, I have sounds setup for restore up and restore down, maximise, minimise etc and although they can be previewed they simply don't work when I maximise a window or restore it.
Some sounds like windows startup and windows exit still work and can be changed in the control panel.
Sounds like New Mail Notification used by Outlook Express doesn't play when mail arrives but the PC's internal speaker beeps once, as if the soundcard is not installed. I have removed all the creative drivers and applications, cleaned the registry and reinstalled the softwar eincluding the latest driver pack but this had made no difference. I have even restored XP to an earlier installation with Ghost and then the sounds work. Unfortunatly the earlier version would mean I would loose too much data so I am loathed to keep this.
Any help would be appreciated as this is driving me nuts.
