is there any free places to advertise a site to get hits for it, like ways to put it on a search engine or list it any where for free?

There are sites out there (Haven't got any links because I don't use them) that claim to submit your site to 1,000's of search engines, but Just use meta tags and your site should be picked up by search engine "robots"
