I believe the name of the bug was a screamapillar. I don't remember what exactly happened to it, but I remember Homer thought he killed it..was tried, confessed to the murder to save Marge and did community service where he thought some old lady was going to kill him.

In the end, it all turned out to be a massive setup for some TV show as I recall that episode.
