I do it every time i have just reformated and re installed xp home and it has to be shut down by the power button(safe to turn off comp and all that crap) please remind me how to over come this

there can be many possbility...!!
one of it is the driver issues... check all is compatible with xp

or see this if it can work microsoft update

but do u try to wait for it to shutdown?? coz sometimes... it takes time to really shutdown the com...

u add apm in the add hardware wizard thingy majig i think
 
I think what GoNz0 is trying to say is this>

* Go to Control Panel, then go to Power Options.
* Click on the APM tab, then check the "Enable Advanced Power Management support."
* Shut down your PC.

It should now successfully complete the Shut Down process.
