Sharing a printer Not through a Computer

Here is my setup.. I have 4 computers in my house and 1 Printer. Right now the Printer is connected to my computer.. but when ever someone sends a job, my computer gets really laggy. Is there a way to connect the printer to the router instead of my computer.. so when someone prints.. it doesn’t effect my computer? We are in the stage of maybe getting a new printer (Have a HP DeskJet 722C), are there any good ones with an ethernet connection built in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

shouldn't noticeably affect your computer at all. How are you sharing this printer, Netbios? Does this happen with all print jobs large or small, ie a small text job as opposed to a fullpage color print job? I share two printers in a 4 PC LAN and never noticed any slowdown on the PCs during a print operation.

Yeah it will lag his computer. Color print jobs are massive. They bring the 10 mbps network and old print servers at work to its knees. Especially if it's a fast USB 2.0 printer, it'll hog bandwidth on the FSB.

You need an ethernet ready printer $$$$. Or an etehernet to USB converter box. Do a search for print sharing on google.

Other option would be a clunky old 486 computer. Note Unless its a 100 mbps network you may still get major network lag.

Shirow: Yes, you can purchase a printer server. D-Link and Linksys both make them, as well as others. Here's a link for you.

j79zlr: depending on what someone does with their system they certainly could notice a slowdown, be it networking or locally on thier PC.

LeeJend: Your suggestion would work, but is more work than needs to be done. You are incorrect in saying that you need an "ethernet ready printer."

He said either or man and all you did was suggest the same thing and provide a link sheesh.

Maybe instead of spending money at all you can move the printer to a computer that is less used, so it wouldn't matter if it got slowed down or not.

Krux: It's not what you would call a "ethernet to USB converter box"

haha :) sorry, but does it not do basically the same thing? :)

no, it does not. There is no such thing as an "ethernet to USB converter box" You could ignorantly call it that if you desired, but it would be incorrect. It is a server, as it's name suggests.

That is an ethernet NIC card. That is not a converter. The USB is simply a different means than your PCI bus. This will not allow you to hook up a printer to one end and the other to your network and print.

"I" never said it would but I think thats what leejend confused it with.

Wow I love having an argument and not having to say anything. (Hugs Krux.)

But the sad part is that Krux too doubted me. Sigh...

YES, THERE IS!

It took about 30 seconds to find this on google. Nice side bar add.

Check facts before posting maybe?

And just for grins at my local store:

At $30 I'm mad I bought a second printer last month. (No I'm not. I told wife it was for her but just happens to be 6 cartridge photo printer that works great with my new digital camera.) ;-)

And if you don't have a fry's around:

the problem is, all those things you just posted links to are alternates for putting a ethernet card in your pc, I don't think that they can make a printer work on a network.

Jeez *****, *****, *****...

Took 3 minutes to find this one. Getting pricey though $176.
This is a true print server USB to Ethernet. I still bet you could make those cheapo's work with the correct driver software.

PS Doing the search I found a lot of Mac products. Seems this is a peice of cake with a Mac. Just a matter of the printer drivers having some added code.

And here is a cheapo alternative for parallel printers.

But I digress.

The point was that the technology exists and it just takes a trip down Google lane to find it (in minutes).

Ok, maybe one more.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
