Sharing a DSL connection [freeserve in the UK] - help!

If the modem is connected to your main pc which has got xp, then you should be able to just set up a ad-hoc wireless network between the two and use windows internet connection sharing, no need for routers! The only prob. there would be is that the computer with the DSL connection would need to be switched on for the other pc to connect.

thats why a router is nice, becuase the main comp doesn't have to be on

worset case senario Mubbs the router connects 2 your computer you still have usb modem plugged in, you then enable the net connection to be shared via the router wirelessly, can be done but means main comp has to be on :(

<edit> looking on dabs they have very clear catogories, one of which is
ChannelExpander-Transparent.gif
DSL/ADSL/Cable Modems with Wireless Router so presume you ordered one from this catogory such as:
http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/networking/productView.htm?quicklinx=2B9N
in which case your fine :D

My setup :-

Alcatel USB model connected to desktop computer. Shared via Netgear MA101 USB wireless network adaptor.

Laptop Netgear MA401 PCMCIA wireless network card.

Network set-up in Ad-HOC mode (ie no routers needed).

Not the best set-up, but cost effective for what I want to do.

see my edit, either way he's fine :D

Runs over to corner to check. No he seems fine, he's just having a nap!

Thanks for asking the question Henyman. It wasn't a combo modem/router, so I also ordered the:

DSL-604+ ADSL Router Wireless LAN Connectivity

which is!

Will send teh other one back ;)

Not terribly impressed with the description DABS gave to the other one though... Broadband wirelss router", kind of implies to me that it is modem ????

Anyway sorted now - will let you know "how I get on next week!

any probs with set up let us know - I think you'll be happy with the way you've ended up - although I've recently had problems with my wi-fi part I've never regretted getting the router/modem and it does give you the true "always on feel" - you can boot and have ntfs for your wallpaper or something if your an activedesktop kinda person even!

Enjoy - ;)

I am!! Enjoying that is :) It actually all works with the minimal of fuss - I'm totally wireless now :D

Thanks for all the offers of support - the only thing I can say now is:

D-Link rocks!!!!!

w00t now i know what to buy if i do the same thing

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
