setting the temp directory

hi, does anyone know how to alter the temp directory that XP uses for operations such as its CD writing functions?

I have a few different partitions on my hard drive, and there's not much more than 500mb empty space in the boot partition of XP. When I write a CD using XP, I keep getting warnings that I'm running low on space in the XP partition, as all the temp files are created.

I've got plenty of space in a different partition, and need to make XP use this partition for the temp files.


any help would be great!

Control Panel / System / Advanced / Environment Variables (at the bottom).

Then under User Variables you can change the values for TEMP and TMP to whatever you want.

You can also use TweakUI in Powertoys for WinXP to set most of these.

Now that I've actually looked at the file system, changing where the TEMP and TMP are won't affect where files for the CD burner are stored...so TweakUI is probably the best way to do that.

It does seem to have worked though (without using TweakUI)

no more 'running low on disk space' warnings
