Well... I loved XP up until a week ago.

You regulars to this forum probably read about my System Restore program failing completely.

Well, I decided to bite the bullet and run a Repair installation
of XP.

It started off innocent enough, copying files to my hard drive,
and telling me it had to reboot to continue. After rebooting,
the XP screen popped up with the blue progress bar, and then
the secondary setup screen flashed on the screen for half a second before I was greeted by a blue screen of death.

NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS

I can't boot to Safemode because setup is running.
I can't boot to the last known good menu because setup
is running.
I tried running the Repair again, with the same results.

Don't bother with the MS Support web site regarding this message, because they only have two entries about Intellipoint software, which I don't have.

The only thing I've changed since installing XP Pro was the
installation of my USB card reader, which isn't plugged into my
PC.

Here is the info. I found on this error:

"A higher level driver has attempted to call a lower level driver through the IoCallDriver() interface, but there are no more stack locations in the packet, so the lower level driver would not be able to access its parameters, as there are no parameters for it. This is a disastrous situation, since the higher level driver thinks it has filled in the parameters for the lower level driver (something it MUST do before calling the lower level driver); however, since there is no stack location for the latter driver, the former has written off of the end of the packet. This means that some other memory has probably been corrupted."

I think I'm screwed here, but I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know how to stop the setup process from the
command line?

2. Can someone tell me how to move my Outlook Express email
database via command line, just in case I have to reformat?

3. I'm running a legit XP Pro Corp. version but I need the product
ID number to use free MS Support. Does anyone know how
to get this from a command line?

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(

have you got another drive or a partition to put all your stuff on ?

just use copy oldfile d:

Your email account is in documents and settings , maybe just copy that whole lot, just in case

To copy all of the contents of one disk to another disk, use the diskcopy command. When using diskcopy, it also formats the disk as it is copying so you can use an unformatted disk to copy to.

diskcopy c: d:

As far as killing setup :(

i dont know

Thanks DrX... I couldn't remember where OE stored it's
mail database. I have four other partitions, so I'll take
your advice and copy the entire Documents & Settings folder.

Yeah... this is a hell of situation. Who knew that Repair would
actually Destroy. :('

no kidding.. this is horrible man... dunno why XP would crash like that... um.. I would just copy everything over and do a fresh install, good luck with it...

keep us posted on what happens...

LOL!!!!!!!! dont mean to laugh, but if i remember right, you had had some off-the-wall problems with xp since day one.. good to hear ya still like it though.

I think the repair in xp is better than a complete reinstall, but even in 9x when ever i saw people reinstall 9x, i saw more not work than actually help. Usually when something like this happens, ya got to chock it up and eat it! Unfortunately! Hopefully you have alittle DOS knowledge where you can save some data and move to another partition. If not here is an awesome DOS webpage for all the commands...

As far as exiting the setup, it sounds like you cant even boot, but if you can get into safemood... night try looking in the "run once" section in the registry.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]

see if anything is there. If not there, i have no idea. Try a nice clean install and hopefully the nightmares you have had will go away!

Just out of curiousity....

Did you ORIGINALLY do an update of a previous operating system, or did you do a complete CLEAN install???

The reason I ask is that of the 5 installs I have done, the ONLY one that worked (almost) flawlessly was the reformat and clean install.

The other 4 all (2 win98, 2 winME) had various problems. I got so tired of troubleshooting each little quirk that I (ultimately) just bit the bullet and did the Format/Clean Install on all 4 machines.

They have all worked <more or less> perfectly since.

Hence, my belief that--> XP likes to start with a "clean house".

Just my observation, of course.

LPDad - Yeah it was a clean install.

pc_tek - Actually the system ran great until a couple of weeks
ago when System Restore stopped working.

Well... since I do consulting work, I can purchase corporate
versions of software at reasonable prices. Unfortunately, that
means I can't use the free support that comes with XP, so
I broke down and paid the $35 plus an hour and a half of
long distance charges, hoping to solve my problem.

The tech. had very little information on NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS, so after a lot of screwing
around, we went into Recovery Console, deleted the current
registry (which stopped that damn setup from running), and
the current software settings. We then restored the registry
and software settings that XP stores after the initial installation.

This got me back into XP, so I could back up my mail files, but it
pretty much trashed everything.

We then went to work on getting System Restore to work, but
it stumped the tech. too. We attempted to start the
service manually, but got an error 1395. He tried looking that
up, but couldn't find any XP information on that either.

In the end it became apparent that, while he knew what
he was doing, he had very little information to work with, since
XP is a relatively new OS.

I ended up reformatting my C partition and doing a fresh install.

One thing I forgot to ask him about involved the Recovery Console. Even though I log into it as administrator, when I
would attempt to access any folder besides C and C:\windows,
I would get an Access Denied message. Still stumped on that one.

Major headache. I hope it doesn't happen again, but at least
I know how to get back into XP if it does.

Thanks for all your ideas.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
