Hi

I'm trying to circumvent some website blocking software behind a corporate firewall. Nothing dodgy, just irritating company policy.

It blocks URLs on the basis of domain name. If I do a PING to determine the IP address and use that instead, it lets me go to the site.

I was wondering if there is any software out there that can basically run as a local proxy and automate this, ie turn all URLs into their IP-address equivalents?

I've tried Proximotron but you have to manually provide the IP addresses. I need something to do this on the fly or as a plug-in to IE.

Cheers

Careful...

Many companies have instant termination policies for anyone trying to circumvent their blocking software. I wouldn't try to get around any firewalls, etc. It was put there for a reason. Just good advice.

dude what you are doing is clased as hacking sooner or later you will be caught by the network admins, they put firewalls in place for a reason, not jsut to block you from looking at things during working hours but also to provide security for the company . do whats right and dont try and by pass the firewalls.
and have a nice day at work now. :D

Well way I see it is that there's no rule to say I can't use IP addresses in IE instead of domain names.

And the sites I want to go to aren't those banned by our company's IT policy (ie cracks, warez, porn). But they're blocked as potential bandwidth wasters (I don't know how the software determines the likely wasting of bandwidth). Things like www.winamp.com, for downloading the occasional plug-in - I can't see the problem with this site. And windowsmedia.com - provided you don't stream media all day?

If the simple act of using IP addresses constitutes hacking, hell that's great! Always wanted to be a hacker, but I didn't know I was smart enough :)

I don't think they can sack me without warning for using creative means that are not prohibited by the official company policies.

Call me a rebel :p

So, despite all the advice you're going to pursue trying to access sites that your company has deemed as non-productive. Get used to waiting. The lines at the unemployment office are long and slow moving.

Hey, cool it !

We're here to help others by answering their questions, not Judging them.

I'm not trying to be judgemental

I'm trying to help this guy keep his job. We just had 25 people terminated for doing just what he is suggesting.
