Hi all,

Was wondering if SBS2003 has an internal messenger service that can be deployed to workstations?

Kind of like MSN messenger but for only within the domain.

Flipping through the services, I can't see it.

Thanks,

Heeter

Not that I'm aware of, but you could use any program really and just block the ports from going outside. I think?

Well I would assume you'd need a proprietary internal installation, allowing them to login but only communicate on the inside.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Would there be a third party that would this and be deployed from server?

Thanks,

Heeter

I don't know about live messanger, but a company I currently do a project for is using internal SIP server for the windows messanger. People can add contacts from the GAL, but no outside contacts. I'm pretty sure that's disabled by choice.

Windows messanger can also sign into exchange... Have a look on Technet, maybe you'll find something useful.

I'm told that the company is currently working on moving to Live messanger as well, so it's seems possible but you'll have to do some digging...

Simple answer, No.

Expanded answer is that MS pulled the IM portion out of SBS and now sells it as a stand alone product, Live Communicaiton Server. If you owned a prior verion and had Software Assurance you may qualify for a LCS license but my guess is you didn't and don't.

We tend to just allow regular use of Messenger and find most clients stick to email anyway. Messenger does allow for easy RDP sessions for training, help and "show me" connections which can sometimes be of use internally or externally. Example: small business does it's own books however has an external accountant. Accountant needs to see some numbers so instead of sneakernet or emailing corporate data the account uses Messenger to respond to a "Request for Assistance" from somebody inside the network so they can view the books.

Of note here is compliance issues. If your site has any SEC of HIPAA or other compliance issues capturing, archiving and searching IM can be a real pain in the ....
