Saving PNG as an ICO

I am trying to save png files as icons, and I am using Irfanview, and have also tried Photoimpact.

I have a shot here of the two of them:

The PNG file is on the left.. when I save it as an ICO file (icon) it no long is transparent.

Can someone please offer me advice on how to keep it nice and transparent.

Have you tried Axialis Iconworkshop? It should be able to preserve transparency when converting.
