sata 2 vs 1

see that SATA II is 2x throughput
getting New MB with SATA II ports
(not for this reason - old MB died anway)
question - will older SATA I drives work?
if so, at what speed (I or II)

SATA I drives will work, but obviously not outside of spec. They will perform at SATA I levels, similar to how USB 2.0 ports will allow USB 1.x devices to function.

Sata 2 isnt eny faster for physical disk reads, disk cahce to system will be faster though - but what good is a 8 or 16mb burst??

the guys with SATA I (me) are way faster (30 secs) than those with IDE

Well the only way to tell that your SATA 1 is gaining you 15 seconds over IDE is 2 set up 2 equal PC's. One with SATA 1 and 1 with IDE. Then test. Your buddy's pc may have a faster CPU or more ram ETC.
