Resource Hacker!!!

Here's a neat little WinAll hacking utility that allows you to make changes in your windows appearances and other features. Add new resources to executables. Enable a program to support multiple languages, or add a custom icon or bitmap (company logo etc) to a program's dialog.

I've used it to change my 'StartButton" appearence:

Step #1)
A- Run "Resource Hacker" and open the file "%windir%\Explorer.exe".
B- You see a Tree of all Resources in this file, expand the "String Table
C- Find the "start" and replace it with your own text. then press the [Compile Script] button.
D- SAVE "Explorer.exe" AS "MyStart.exe" (I mean do not save the original Explorer.exe, but SAVE it AS a new file)
E- Quit "Resource Hacker".


Step #2)
A- Click on the [Start] button and choose the "Run..." item from the start menu. (Or use the shortcut key WinKey+R)
B- Type "RegEdit" in the Run "Dialog Box". And then press the [Ok] buton to run the "Registry Editor" program.
C-Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" and find the "Shell" property.
D- Replace value of the "Shell" property to "MyStart.exe".(in 98 you simply type "sysedit" from the start/run menu and modify the "system.ini" [boot] section 'shell=explorer.exe' and change to 'MyStart.exe')
E- Quit "Registry Editor".
F- Restart your system.

Note about Registry Editor:
if you did not find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon", you can search the Registry for the "Explorer.exe", to do this use the Edit Menu | Find Next (Ctrl+F).

Hphm . . . this might be useful to some people around here, but it doesn't seem to be written clearly enough for people who are completely new or at a novice level. This tweak is well-explained in a thread "Hacking the start button" already. Thanks anyways.

Most things in life aren't!

I posted the thread and link for those that might be interested and or have the know how. I also explained the hacking of the start button for the sole purpose of giving most people at least an iotim of use for this utility even if there knowledge stops there as does mine!
