Removing StartUp Programs

My computer had XP preinstalled with a weather bug program on it. My wife also installed AOL Messenger (AIM) on the computer and they both launch at start-up. I am trying to remove these. I have tried the start file, they are not found, and I have also tried msconfig however when I uncheck them in the startup area and restart the computer I get a box saying its running in another mode and I must return all programs back to full startup. (Sorry dont remember the full correct language)

Anyone know of another way besides the registry and/or deleting them to remove them from startup?

Thanks.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(
