Removing Linux Drive

For awhile now, I have had 2 drives, 200GB Windows XP Pro (main drive), and a (i think) 4gb Linux Ubuntu Drive (secondary). Never set anything up, everything worked by itself, user switching and all.

I don't want to use that drive anymore, so I removed it from the computer and rebooted and a black screen came up saying loading grub something (i forget) and also Error 12 after that....

I put the drive back in, and it's back to normal??

Any ideas, fixes etc?

Put your XP CD and run the recovery console and use the command "fixmbr" That will rewrite the master boot record for XP and you should be in business.....It worked for me when I first had to deal with GRUB

Wouldn't doing that, remove all information from my Windows Drive, or screw up settings?

All "Fixmbr" does is it Repairs the master boot record of the boot disk for XP

If your CD isn't booting, make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD

So, remove Linux drive, reboot with windows boot disc, and then type in Fixmbr (this can be floppy boot disc too right)

not the boot disks.....

You need to go into the BIOS and set the Windows XP CD to be the first device to boot, put the hard drive second.

boot from the CD, enter the recovery console (press R when it asks you whether you want to install windows etc.) When you're at the console, type: fixmbr

and that will remove GRUB from your system.

Alright, I'll check that out..I'll let you know

Thanks

No Prob..would like to know how it turns out...you should be good :)

I followed your instructions, got to the part to type in fixmbr, gives me all these warning, I'm like OMG I"M GOING TO LOSE EVERYTHING!!!

did it anyways and worked great!

Thanks alot man REP!!

Glad it worked out.. for you..:D

Hello This is ali,
Thanks for sharing ur information, I have another question, I have Windows 2000 server on c: and Windows Xp is on d: and Fedora core 5 is on last drive whatever it is.

If i apply same method of fixmbr from windows xp bootdisk as told by you. would it work or not.

Because I am afraid of losing my windows 2000 server because it contains some important information for me.

plz guide me abt it

It would leave you with booting only to XP.... not what you want I guess....

You have not said so, but it sounds like you just want to drop Fedora from the boot options?

On the other hand if you were to back up the W2K files you wanted over to XP and decided to make this machine single boot - then yeah this would be the WTG.

If you just remove Fedora, the fixmbr will put back a Windows MBR, which would then read your boot.ini which should hopefully contain your Windows 2000 install, and your Windows XP install, so all FIXMBR would do is remove grub.

You can run fdisk /mbr from Win98/ME bootdiscs and it will repair the master boot record to load XP. Windows doesn't actually use the MBR, it just boots the first active bootable drive.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
