Recovery in xp...IMPORTANT

Ive got a big problem in xp,im missing a sysytem file and i cant boot up the system. My problem is,how can i use rapair in xp,when i use that option notting happens. Any suggestions????

Dont want to format drive c,so please post any suggestions you may have.

Try doing a reinstall instead of a repair.

can you boot via last good known boot? (press f8 on bootup)
or safemode?

well my experience with Repair is not a very good one. I managed to somehow delete something in Device Manager, and it would not start windows. So I popped in the Windows XP CD, and asked it to Repair. Repair all done. I restart, wow, i am amazed, all my files are here!

But wait, my page file is gone! and i couldn't seem to set it or do anything else (no pagefile). I eventually reinstalled windows XP.

I've had the same experiance as you with repair
with me... if i cant get into safemode or last good known bootup thing... then i install 2k or xp on another partition, backup data and format
much cleaner method

hmmmm....

Press F8 on start up (after IDE check)... whole list of options there which might help
