What are the major RTOS(real time operating systems) other than VxWorks in the market now. Also i would like to know its area of application.

Generally the criticallity of the specific RTOS requires you to write a custom real time kernel. They are mostly used by the military, industrial process controls and in the hopefully not so distant future they will be used for vehicle collision avoidance systems.
