Ram confusion

I want to install additional ram in my system. I currently have 256mb PC800 RDRAM (2X128mb).
System is a Dell dimension P-4 1.7ghz. i850 board.
I wish to install another 256mb.
My question is what is the difference between ecc and non-ecc ram, how do I know which type I have, and can you install a pair of non-ecc rdram with a pair of ecc rdram?
Any help would be appreciated.

Just go to www.crucial.com and use there memory selector. It will tell you everything you need to know even if you dont want to buy from them.
Oh and by the way you cant mix ecc and non ecc ram. but most ram is non ecc anyways.

ecc is something like error correcting, and its slower than non-ecc ram, + its more expensive

Checked out the crucial site but was no help as they do not deal in RDRAM. Thanks anyways for the tip.

... and its slower than non-ecc ram

i've wondered that... it's because ecc uses 9 bits per byte (parity) instead of 8, right? so it's effectively 13% slower?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
