Problem

Here is my problem. I have looked everywhere but cannont find anything about it. When I login to my account in windows xp pro after a cold boot (doesn't happen any other time) it takes forever to load up my firewall software (Kerio) and antivirus (AVG). Now if I unplug the ethernet connection to my dsl modem and try to log in (from cold boot) it loads immediatly. Even if I cold boot and get the login screen and then unplug the connection it boots immediatly. What do you think the problem could be? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to ntfs.org. Enjoy the view, enjoy your stay.

Just thought I'd say that next time you might want to be alittle more specific in your subject. Might get more people to read it.

That's probably a bad idea if he's on dynamic IP. One day he'll collide with another IP.

Oh, and welcome aboard grassROOT! :)

By any chance do you have the AV or firewall going out to check for updates at every login?

And define "takes forever".
5 seconds from switch to Windows Screen
20 Seconds at windoes screen
20 seconds from desk top appearing to app's loaded and responding
etc

You do not set the WAN IP, you set the LAN IP and should also set the DNS servers.

What LAN IP?

Modem, not router. So it's the WAN IP he's setting.

Unless he means a router anyway, but written like that there's no router when I read it.

Thanks for all the replies and welcoming me. To clarify "takes forever" I should have said generally takes about 2 and a half to 3 minutes, but if I unplug the ethernet connection it takes about 30 seconds or so. I'll try to be a little more specific in the Subject line for future sake. I stopped the AV and Firewall software from checking for updates automatically but it does not seem to be doing any good. I will continue to mess around with things in hope of finding it out, but please keep the suggestions coming.

If you set your LAN IP through Network Connections, Local Area Connection, etc., to 192.168.0.10 or whatever, it will help because I bet the delay your experiencing is windows looking for a DHCP server.

like a few other people have said, only do this if you have a router. If you connect the modem directly to the computer DO NOT do this.

Now let me say what I thin the problem it. Im assuming that for your DSL connection you have to use a username and password (I kno I do). What may be happening is that your connection starting up and your firewall starting at the same time and may be "conflicting" thus slowing down the boot process; the same may be with the antivirus.

One suggestiin is to purchase a router and use that, you enter your username and pas into the modem and it does all the loggin on for you. You remove the username and pas from the compand its just like cable, no windows settigns required.

What I'm saying is that is not true. This works for a non-networked direct DSL/Cable modem to NIC connection.

No offence, but bullsh*t! If he's not on a private LAN subnet then a private IP will NOT work. There's just no way in hell. You don't know what you're talking about.

Setting a static IP at all (non-private) on a dynamic scheme will not work in this case (at least not in the long run).

Purchasing a router however, like Admiral Michael suggested, probably will. This is because the DHCP request to the ISP (and possible login) will be handled by the router, plus the DHCP delay to request an IP from the router is negligable. But it comes with a price of course...

I added a router to my configuration and it seems to have solved my problem. There is no lag time on login anymore. Thanks for the help, it was really appriciated.

I am just curious could you explain this please? *Sarcasm* That will not work, as stated above numerous times. I had to say my piece.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
