planning an upgrade.. got a few questions

i am planning to upgrade my computer.

i currently have 1.2ghz amd athlon processor

i would like to upgrade it to a 2.0 or higher, how do i go about doing that, is there places to just add the rest or do i need to totally remove the full current processor and add a new faster one?

whats a rough cost of a 2.0 amd athlon processor? and how much would i get for my current processor?

is there limitation to the mother board for how high it can go, because i aint sure if it would handle 2.0mhz how would i find out?


secondly, i want to upgrade my 32mb geforce 2... to a 64mb geforce 4 (or 128)

but again, does it matter on the motherboard because i dont know if its made to go that powerful?


and finally i want to add a new harddrive but i want to be really careful when buying one.

my current harddrive is 40 gig, ive had it roughly 2 years and its still quiet as a mouse but i have a friend who has had his computer less than a year and you have hear his hard drive making alot of noise when its in use... kinda like a relly rough scratching sound or something.... well i dont want my new harddrive to start making noise after so long, so what should i lookout for when buying a new one?

You'll need to buy a new motherboard and processor because of higher front-side bus speeds for the processors. Almost any new video card will work in your current motherboard, but you'll end up having to get a new board anyway.

If you're not overly obsessed with the speed of your drive, a 5400 RPM drive is cheap, quiet, generates less heat, and is very reliable since lower spindle speeds are not as hard on the internal components. I have both speeds and tested them, and the difference is minimal between the drives. 120 GB is currently the most economical hard drive size as far as price per gigabyte goes.

Currently, most hard drives brands aren't much different from each other. People will say "Seagate breaks all the time" or "Maxtor breaks all the time", but the fact is that when a company makes millions of hard drives, there are bound to be thousands of duds. Just go with whomever will give you a three-year warranty.

For whatever it's worth, it's possible buy an Athlon XP 2400 with a board for less than $100 US, so you probably won't get much for your current equipment. When I get old boards like that, I usually build a cheap computer for my in-laws/parents/siblings just to get them on the internet and get music.

i'm not "obsessed" with the speed of my drive but i do want a fast one.

my current hard disk is maxtor and its one of the best ones i have come accross... all previous hard disks of mine and ones of others get noisy and slow over time but this current one is still running perfect

It depends on how old the motherboard is. Post the MB brand and part number and we can check for you.

If the MB supports Athlon XP you could upgrade to an XP 2000 with 266 Mhz FSB, maybe a little higher XP 2200. XP 2000 with fan (you will need a new one) is $72, free shipping. http://www.essencompu.com/icywebstorefront.asp?ID=4&sID=8

Make sure the MB has an AGP slot. It is brown and sits a little further back from the rear panel. If not that means a PCI version graphics card wich will be slower and more expensive. If you don't have an AGP slot you definitely would be better off with a new MB.

As for hard disks, everyone has their favorites. I like Western Digital, Maxtor is good, IBM is good but pricey, avoid the Seagates. And stay with 72oo RPM drives the 5-10 savings for a 5400 isn't worth it.

The 730 comes in several versions. The latest 730D does support the 266 FSB.

Funny, it says your FSB speed is limited to 200 mhz, but that you are running at 266 mHz.

The information I was looking for is missing. Was this the mainboard of system summary ICON? It should say the system board manufatcurer at top of the list and model number. It may be hidden in yours if it is a Taiwanese OEM MB.

In that case finding out what rev sis chip is going to be harder. you could try looking at the top of the but it is probably covered by the chipset heatsink.

You may also have an older Bios. Clcik the CPU/Bios icon it may have more info.

No, still missing the MB manufacturer information which is what we need to check.

Don't suppose you have a manual with the system? But from the missing MB info it looks like it's generic MB. No way to find out for sure if it will support the XP processors.

There are utilities that might be able to dig out the info. Can someone else post the names and links?
 
sorry dont have the manual. i dont care anymore i will take the computer to the bloke who is upgrading and he can decide what to do.
