usb short circuit

well, i'm starting to learn about electronic components and was wondering if i could use a usb port to power some small device. so i did something which i shouldn't have done -- i took my voltmeter and tried to measure the voltage inside one of my usb ports. i noticed a spark in the usb port so i took the probes out and watched as my computer turned off. now my computer will not show any signs of life. no fans will start, no power led, etc. i've come to the conclusion that the short probably fried something in my computer but i'm not sure what. my motherboard is a giga-byte k8ns pro and my power supply is from a company called JustPC which i've never heard of before. i thought that there would be some sort of device that acted like a fuse to prevent these sort of things but i'm not sure if my computer has something like that. am i going to have to replace the motherboard? never again will i do something like that. i feel so dumb.

As well you should

I would just take all the componants out of your machine, (everything). Then replace them where you found them again. i.e. in the same place (make sure you do not have the power cord plugged into the pc when you are doing this).

After you have the processor, memory and v/card installed, plug the comp back in and see if it boots up, if it does you are a lucky sob, then continue to reconnect the various componants.

If it doesn't turn on well your SOL, and a new motherboard or perhaps new system are in order.

Urk, Yeah - overloading USB = bad.

My mates mobo died after it kept on moaning about overloading the USBs - and that without pokin' it

Think it is as lancer has said - a new mobo job

how can you overload a usb if you want to know how much voltage is in the usb well it sure is less than 12v, you can't over load a usb either by have 2 or 3 devices connected to it usb can support up to 127 devices

My mate managed to frazzle his mobo, and the USB was overloading. Soon realised when coming to take stuff out he had put in any risers (mobo was completely flat against mobo tray)

Yeah, not good at all, he had to swap from USB mice/keyboard to PS/2 out of ph34r

He only realised now he's taking it apart to fit new mobo/cpu.. and he's meant to know more than me about computers I mean at one point tapping the case killed the pc (case was grounding, not the PSU - all sorts of chaos) PCB againsts the mobo tray = fun short circuiting
