hello to all , first of all a friend recommended these boards so maybe i could get some good advice or a solution for my problem.
it may seem minor to some of you but its giving me a headache for days now.

the setup: 2 computers, one with XP home the other with XP Pro.
My docs, Shared Docs and local disk (HD) are shared out on both machines

the router: linksys befsr81
internet connection sharing: no problems both are online and running great - DSL type 768 dn 128 up

PROBLEM: i can see and access the files that are on the xp home cpu using the xp pro cpu, BUT not the other way around.

on the xp pro cpu i go start>my network places>view workgroup computers - both machines are shown and from there i can do pretty much whatever i want

same path using the home machine gets me nothing

i have no firewall set up not even the xp one is on.
ive run the network setup wiz, with and without using the setup disk.

im at my wits end.....my cpu is mocking me.
im sure its something quite simple, i just HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS !!!

any and all replies are greatly appreciated !! thnx !!

Have you checked with linksys website?
they have SOME ok info their too.

I have the same problem...

On the computer that "does'nt pick up anything",,, can you search for the other computer and THEN browse it?!?

Do you have file and print sharing installed on both machines? If so you do have also have "Use Simple File Sharing' enabled??

thnx for the replies,

linksys site has good info, just not what i am looking for

in regards to 'searching' for the other cpu by name that doesnt work either - 'no results found'

and yes simple file sharing is enabled on the xp pro cpu, there is no check box for it on the home cpu though, is that an xp pro only thing? or is it located somewhere else?

just noticed the bit about having file sharing 'installed'

my setup for local area connection properties general tab goes

client for microsoft networks - checked
QoS packet scheduler - checked
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks - checked
internet protocol tcp/ip - checked

authentication tab
no boxes checked

and as said before no firewall activated under advanced tab

both machines are setup this way too

problem solved

this is what i did on the xp home cpu

mycomputer>rightclick>manage

in the left window expand service and applications

click services - list should pop up in right window

go down to workstation - should be last in list

workstation>rightclick>properties
look for startup type make it automatic

mine was set to disabled - i dunno why

reason you need it
"Creates and maintains client network connections to remote servers. If this service is stopped, these connections will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

click ok

after i did this i could see and access from the xp home machine to the xp pro one

hope this can help anyone else who has the same/similar problem

BAH you know why!

You unchecked it so that your computer wouldnt have the lag ater loading the desktop, i guess looking for the other networked computers and not finding them........

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
