Norton antivirus 2004 (beware)

True. They damn well better get thing's fixed though. I'm not wanting to have to reformat.

Didn't some of you (and others in other places) do the "Beta Testing"?? I have to wonder why it didn't show up then - surely someone had it on their systems long enough and left enough in their temp interenet file for this slow down to appear!

BTW Enyo - that was an interesting read over at Broadband.com!

My subscription to NAV 2003 is good until Nov - I am watching this very clsoely!

I installed the 15 day before activation version NAV 2004 pro, it didn't cause a slow down in rebooting, maybe about 10 seconds, but it abused my notification area. A lot of notification area icons went a.w.o.l. I read a few comments, it didn't slow my connection down still at around 600k ( yeah my mum finally got me broadband wahoo me up from 20k) but it was a drain on my 512 meg of pc 133 ram. I reinstalled V2003 in system works. I remember the same type of comments when trying beta's posted here there n everywhere when V2003 was released.

So when my subscription runs out, for some reason it isnt untill 11:1/2 months from now (I was having problems with a component not installing so I uninstalled it, with NPfire, sys works etc and it restarted my subscription from last Saturday week when I reinstalled the V2003 versions to correct a problem).
So I guess I will wait for the V2005.

Before someone says, I installed my V2002 firewall. system works. Then installed V2003 system works firewall etc.

I have Panda Platinum - It has a firewall built into with the antivrus and both of together don't even a tenth of the resources that NAV using just by itself .. It don't slow anything down on my pc, it runs very good ..

i think ppl use norton because its a brand name that comes with most pcs these days.

i guess NTFS should do a review or some thing on each major AV program to see what ones the best.

I'd use Norton over McAfee any day coz it's much better at detecting virii. I know that Norton products hog up system resources, but there isn't any other AV products that I've come across and liked.

i haven't really liked a virus scanner since the old tbav program...i really liked it in its hey-day.

what i used to like doing (when i was a script kiddie) was getting the latest verison of sub7 and seeing which anti virus program picked it up the fastest.. to tell the truth, what i noticed was that it took the larger companies (norton/mcafee) much longer to release virus definitions that would detect it..the smaller ones had it within days...

Read my old posts :) While i have not reviewed every single feature of every last AV i have posted a lot of comments and complete test data on detection rates which is the the most important thing IMO!

There is no single best AV, they all have pros and cons.

To everyone having issues with NAV2004 hang in there and see if updates appear via LU. They normally do with a widespread problem.

Excellent thread here... there have been folks arguing on another board I use about broadband speeds - some folks think "the system" is slow tonight... others see no change... everyone gets a little confused.

Now I see it could just be some use NAV and some do not! I shall post a link to this thread if I may make so bold and we may discover....

Thanks to Electronic Punk from NTFS.org for pushing this problem in the headlines. The more publicity this issue gets the faster it will be solved. Though after my experience with Symantec Techsupport I am bit sceptical.

People love you now [e]-punk.

this other expression is that we think someone is "a hot sPUNK"

or someone is "very sPUNKY"

It has been very slow tonight. In fact it was on sunday as well. It returned to normal at 23.00 on both nights though. I took out norton 2004 and put 2003 back in so I don't think it was that that was causing the slow throughput.

mine has been 100% since i removed norton.
god knows if I have picked up any virii tho :O

iam i the only one thats had no problems with notton av 2004?

Nope ive not had issues with it, but that said i did not run it for long :p

I've just had a look on symantecs web site and found the solution (I hope it's a temp one)

Web server speed slows when Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect is running

Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus 2004 (NAV), your Web server slows down noticeably.

Solution:
This can be caused by a conflict with the compressed file scanning feature of Auto-Protect. Do the following to change the NAV Options Auto-Protect setting to not scan compressed files:

To disable Auto-Protect compressed file scanning

Start NAV. If NAV is installed as part of Norton Internet Security (NIS) or Norton SystemWorks (NSW), then start NIS or NSW.
Click Options. If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
In the right pane, under "Which file types to scan for viruses," click to uncheck "Scan within compressed files."
Click OK.

I am waiting to see what happens now - as there were folks on the forum that Enyo referenced that said they tried exactly what Symantec suggests and it had no effect????

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
