New System: Starting Troubles (simple)

Take a look through these threads for some tips to overclocking with nvidia's chipsets.

You need a better PSU. I use PC Power and Cooling power supplies.

You also need a better CPU cooler than stock if you are going to overclock.

I'm using the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (TRUE) on 4 of 5 quads (one QX6700, two Q6700s, one Q6600 B3).

I'm using a Zalman 9700 on the 5th quad (Q6600 G0).

The Tuniq Tower 120 is also a good cooler.

Innovation Cooling's Diamond 7 is the best TIM I've tried.

Thanks David, that's tons of good information. It's going to take me awhile to read through those threads, and good options as well.

Thanks again!

*edit, I haven't really found much information on HOW TO overclock but I am really enjoying that community, think I might get into more xtreme modding and overclocking. If only I had more money to spend hahaa

So I will be posting images this weekend, after I get my new RAM, but these are the details.

I went from:

ASUS M2N32SLI Deluxe Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.4Ghz Dual Core
3GB Dual Channel 1066Mhz RAM (OCZ & Crucial)
Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512MB OC
1x WD SATA2 500GB Hard Drive
Thermaltake Armor JR Mid-Tower Case
Thermaltake Liquid Cooling System for CPU
21" Samsung SyncMaster 215TW Monitor
5.1 Logitech Speakers.
Generic Keyboard & Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse

to having this:

EVGA Nvidia nForce 780i SLI Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz (going to be 3.4Ghz)
4GB Dual Channel 1066Mhz OCZ RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512MB OC
2x WD SATA2 500GB Hard Drive
CoolerMaster Elite Mid-Tower Case (waiting on the Cooler Master Cosmos S Full-Tower)
Stock Heatsink and 2 120MM fans for cooling, will be upgrading soon.
21" Samsung SyncMaster 215TW Monitor (waiting on the 24")
5.1 Logitech Speakers.
Generic Keyboard & Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse

Now half of the items are the same, this was because I was rushed into buying some items and building the system since my system had some problems running, motherboard had died. I will be soon updating the new system with nice new powerful parts and rebuilding my old system!

It does not, weird, I guess I have to wait to see if they fix it..

Overclocking is really nothing more than changing settings in the BIOS. Can you be a little more specific about what you have questions about?

Lots of links here Bman depending on your knowledge of OC'ing.
Choose from newbie or advanced and there are also links to programs for testing/benchmarking.

Basically, i know that you can either change voltages, the mulitiplyer, or the umm i forget, but I want to know what is the best way to do it, a way that I won't damage anything. If possible details on someone doing it with my CPU and MB.

Thanks, I will check that out as well.

Bman, I tried to send you a PM. Not sure if you got it or not. Let me know.

I did get it, I replied.

And yea, I get the basic idea on how to overclock, I just want to be sure and do it the best way possible.

Don't fool with the voltage or multiplier at first. Just change the FSB. See how far you can go without increasing voltage. At some point you'll need to start raising the voltage to your CPU and/or RAM to get a higher overclock. Check out the following link. It is a completely different motherboard than what you have but it may help give you a better idea of what all is going on when you "overclock".

So my new ram is here finally.

OCZ PC2-8500 1066MHZ 1GB sticks (4Gb in total)

Now I was rereading details on my motherboard...

the motherboard says it supports up to 1200MHz RAM, before I paid for my RAM I asked if that means it will support 1066 RAM and everyone said yes. I am now looking at the details of the MB and it says

DDR2 533/667/800/1200MHz SLI-Ready memory

I see no 1066 there, will I be screwed over? Will my 1066 run at 800? or what?

So I just poped those 1066MHz RAM into my system.

All 4GB are showing, those when I look at Everest I get the attached.

Saying it's running at 667Mhz, right?

Now from the speeds that the MB sayings in detail it supports, at the very least it should be running at 800MHz, should it not? And if it supports upto 1200Mhz I should be running at 1066, or I should at least be able to overclock it (if it can be called that) to 1066Mhz....

Is it easy to change in the BIOS? And if I can make it run at 800, can I not make it run at 1066 at which it should be running?

It all depends on the BIOS. Different ones have different options. You might or might not have the options to force the speed in your BIOS. You might be able to force it to run at 800 MHz, but the next speed you'd probably be able to manually select is 1200 MHz. So you'd have to try 800 MHz and overclocking, AFAIK. If the option is there it would be easy to select, yes.

You could also double-check on a BIOS update for your motherboard since they could've added some different capabilities.

I just went into the BIOS and found the area for the ram.

I changed it from 666.7 to 1066, and it seems to be running fine. Technically I didn't overclock it since the ram itself is 1066 ram. But we will see.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. :(

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
