hey guys i am having a technical issue. here is my current setup:

MSI master far2 mother board (dual AMD opterons)
2x 74 gig WD raptors (RAID 0 with MB onboard SATA) < OS
1x 250 gig Maxtor IDE

i have windows xp pro installed on my array, and have used all my free space for video. i need more storage, so i bought another 250 gig HD, but this one is SATA. my 2 onboard SATA's are used, so i got a PCI adapter. heres the problem:

when i plug in the SATA adapter and the new HD, my comp tries to boot from it. i went into bios to change the HD boot priority, but the new WD array overwrite my existing VIA onboard array. when the adapter isnt plugged in, it boots from my onboard perfectly. when i plug it in, my onboard VIA no longer appears in the bios, but the new one does.

how can i install this new SATA HD without losing any of my existing data? thankyou.

I know you probably already checked, but your jumper pins could be set to MASTER on both sets of HDDs change the new one to cable select or secondary Master

Hope this helps... if not, just remember SATA especially when running Raids can be VERY tricky, and you may have to do a complete install...

Create a backup set first.

Then use the backup set and redeploy into the new drives.

Create a backup on what and how seems a little too short the way your putting it, guy has run out of free space thats why he got a new drive. I would think he might be booting into the new sata because like what was said he might have it pinned wrong, I would double check that and force the bios to boot into the os I am sure there is a way , either way take your time and be carefull

yeah i checked the pins and no progress. i tried them all, and i either get the same boot problem or it doesnt find the drive at all. could it be the PCI adapter? i heard that if the adapter uses the same chipset as my MB then it would behave this way. is it worth it to go to the store and buy another SATA PCI adapter and try that? remember, i am not trying to make another array, i just need the new single SATA HD to work. thanks.

also, i am willing to reload windows onto the new HD if i have to, but then how do i restore my other RAID 0 array with the onboard SATA's without reformatting them?

I dont think you can rebuild without formatting that way I might be wrong but somehow I feel I am not.

It sounds like your mobo uses the adapter for SATA for either 1 or the other... as in.. either raid for SATA or SATA itself ... not both... I have heard of this, but not experienced it myself...

Im installing a raid for my machine this weekend, Ill let you know how it goes...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
