New Document Task Pane

I have MSWord 2002 and MSExcel 2002 (MSOffice XP). The New Document Task Pane is displayed whenever I open Excel. When I open Word, however, the pane's "ghost" appears for a second, then disappears. I have opened Tools-Options-View and "Startup Task Pane" is checked.

Any ideas?

Yeah, that works, but I should be able to set it to open automatically, no? (It does in Excel.)

Any other suggestions?
