New Dell - Icons don't show up on desktop

Window XP -- I can't get the Icons to show on the desktop. When I drag an Icon to the desktop it looks like it is going there, but nothing shows. I do it again and it says do you want to replace the icon with this new one. I need Help! I can't figure it out and I use Windows XP all the time.

When you right click on the desktop and go to arrange icons, is the show icons checked?
