New CPU install

I'm thinking about upgrading to a 3.0C GHz Pentium 4. First off, I can just drop it in and windows will be fine, right? Won't have to reinstall or anything.

Second, will hyperthreading work? I do have XP Home Edition, don't know if that's an issue. But also, my current CPU doesn't have it, so Windows isn't configured for it?

If I can just drop it in (which I'm thinking I can), if I turned on hyperthreading in the CMOS would that mess windows up? If it would, I could just leave it off.

Right?

you have to check to see if you mortherboard supports the 3.0GHz and also if it supports hyperthreading.

My motherboard supports it fine...

I was just concerned about how Windows would react to the different CPU and the hyperthreading feature.

You'll need to run a repair on windows as a change in CPU speed will affect the performance.
I've noticed putting my CPU at full throttle without re-installing windows tend to run slower than if I did re-install it.

XP supports hyperthreading and Intel just dropped prices on 2.8C 3.0C so you should get a good deal @ 270 US$ for the 3.0C 800Mhz FSB retail at www.newegg.com

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
